Kevin was born in Liverpool and was brought up by a football-playing family in Toxteth. He has gone on to play as midfielder for Bolton Wanders, Newcastle United, Leyton Orient and Notts County. For four years he captained West Ham United where he saw them return to the Premier League.

As at 2017, he has made 607 appearance in top-flight football and scored 111 goals.
